It is double-sided with #150 grit on both sides.

We have experimented with both finer and coarser diamond plates and have concluded that #150 is best for both flattening stones and rough sharpening knives.

You use this diamond plate to avoid spending hours on a too-fine sharpening stone. It also keeps the sharpening stone flat and free from steel residue. We flatten our stones every time we sharpen, for a few seconds each time, and the stone feels like new with every sharpening.

Length: 202 mm | Width: 70 mm | Thickness: 8 mm

Please note that the diamond plate has relatively low rust protection. If you dry it lightly and stand it up after use, it will not rust, but if stored with moisture, rust will form. This does not negatively affect the stone, but it may not look very pleasant. We at Cleancut use this stone every day, and we let it stay moist. Our diamond plates therefore develop some rust over time, but as mentioned, this does not have a negative impact. Wipe the surface with a paper towel after use to avoid unwanted stains.

Flatten your waterstones!

Flattening a waterstone is very important. You do it for two reasons. Firstly, the stone needs to be perfectly flat to provide a correct contact surface. When the stone is used, it will always wear more in the middle than around the edges. This gives the stone a concave shape, like a skateboard ramp. If you sharpen on a concave stone, the stone will create different angles depending on where you are on the stone. Therefore, it doesn't matter that you, as the sharpener, hold the knife at a constant angle; the result will suffer. The second reason you want to flatten your stone every time you sharpen is to clean the stone of steel residue. You may have noticed that your stone darkens after a while and gets black streaks on it? This is steel residue from the knife that forms a layer between the stone and the knife. The steel residue clogs the stone and covers the sharp particles in the stone that are essential for the stone to "take" well. You get an increasingly inefficient stone, and again, the result suffers. A flat and clean stone is the key to fast and effective stone sharpening, and a coarse diamond plate is the most effective way to flatten your stones.

Note: When the diamond plate is new, it is very aggressive. However, it calms down relatively quickly. We therefore recommend that you first flatten some coarser stones to avoid scratches on the polishing stones. As soon as the diamond plate has been broken in, a slurry cushion is created between the stone and the diamond, and you will then have no scratches to speak of. That's why you should always flatten the stones with water.

Sharpen knives with a diamond plate.

The diamond plate is also the most effective way to rough sharpen a knife. You can use it for several different tasks. The most obvious is to sharpen away nicks and broken tips. Here it is used like a regular sharpening stone, and when you have sharpened away enough steel, you switch to a finer-grained waterstone. Perhaps your knife has no nicks but is very worn on the edge? We usually say that the edge is rounded and has an edge that resembles a U more than a V. Here you need to sharpen away the "shoulders" of the edge so that the U-shape changes to a V. Here too, the diamond plate is a good tool as it saves time compared to a "whetstone". The last area where a diamond plate is invaluable is if you want to thin the blade sides of a knife. If you take out your knife and pinch the edge with your thumb and forefinger, you want that area (the bottom centimeter) to be thin and fine. If you instead have palpable mass there, the knife will cut significantly better after thinning. A good diamond plate does that job faster than a 220-grit waterstone but will at the same time leave coarse marks and scratches that you need to sharpen away with a finer stone (preferably with a waterstone between 220-500 grit). You therefore have to choose between either using the fast diamond plate that leaves scratches, or dedicating more time with a coarse-grained waterstone.
