Microplane started its business manufacturing rasps for carpenters and joiners. But one day in 1994, a Canadian housewife was making orange cake. Frustrated with her grater, she instead fetched her husband's wood rasp and discovered that it was the perfect grater.
All Microplane graters are made for professional use and consist of a multitude of small, razor-sharp edges that are etched rather than stamped, as on traditional graters. The blade thus becomes incredibly sharp, allowing it to make fine cuts through food instead of tearing or shredding: This idea is patented by Microplane.
