Microplane began its business by manufacturing rasps for carpenters and joiners. But one day in 1994, a Canadian housewife was making orange cake. Frustrated with her grater, she instead grabbed her husband's wood rasp and discovered it was the perfect grater.
All Microplane graters are made for professional use and consist of a multitude of tiny razor-sharp edges that are etched instead of stamped, as on traditional graters. The blade thus becomes incredibly sharp, allowing it to make fine cuts through food instead of tearing or shredding: This idea is patented by Microplane.
